General Discussion / Solar eclipse
April 08, 2024, 02:02:49 PM
Here in southern indiana were experiencing something pretty cool.. a total solar eclipse.. supposed to last a little over 4 minutes.. the moon started getting in front of the sun about a hour ago.. it's still probably 20 minutes away from totality.. the state of Indiana has pretty much shut down for this.. lol.. their expecting people from all over the world to flock here to witness this.. lol.. if I remember correctly this will be the third time seeing a total solar eclipse..not really a big deal to me but pretty cool none the less.. we got glasses and a good dark welding helmet for me to look at it..

Competition / 22 rimfire matches
March 24, 2024, 06:19:20 AM
The local 22 rimfire matches are starting back up the second Sunday in april.. and they will have one every month till this coming winter.. had alot of fun shooting in them last year..
This morning I woke up at 3:30 am and couldn't get back to sleep so I come out in my building and decided I might as well weight sort some of my sk+ ammo for this first match.. fun fun.. lol
Any way I got plenty sorted to shoot for a while.. I will shoot some groups with them to see which sort shoots the best..
The sort starts from left to right and first one starts at 51.2 gr. And the end one ends at 51.9 with 51.7 having the most and 51.6 following then 51.5.. hope one of them 3 are the best..

Gunsmithing / New build in the works
March 21, 2024, 07:04:19 PM
I have decided to build another rifle.. this one will be chambered in 7mm prc.. ordered a savage 110 long action from James today along with a 28 inch shilen select match 4 groove bull barrel.. also a gen two fat bastard brake with 3/4 threads..
I'm on the hunt for a mpa competition chassis to put this in but finding one for a long action savage is like finding hens teeth.. if I can't find one I will go with another orxy.. be a few weeks before I get the barrel so I got time to look..
I will use peterson brass and 184 berger hybrids in this cart.. forester dies.. been a minute since I've built one so kinda excited about it.. lol

Competition / Reaching out to a mile..
March 02, 2024, 04:59:04 PM
It's about that time of year again.. that steel match I shoot in (reaching out to a mile) put on by accuracy Indiana is next saturday.. takes about a 100 rounds to get through it with 10 stages I believe.. you can either shoot prone or bring your own portable shooting bench.. they shoot from 400 yards to a mile and every where inbetween..

I will be shooting my 6.5x284 with 144 berger hybrids.. the gun has been shooting really well.. I fouled the barrel in today and made sure my zero was good.. my rounds are all loaded and in my range bag.. I'm ready to go I believe..
Weather doesn't look bad at this point.  Mid 50's and overcast.. perfect in my book...
Sounds like they have a full house of shooters.. 115 total with others standing by in case some don't show up..

Hope I have a good day.. if not I will still have a good day..😁

I also sized 85  6.5x284 cases.. their in the que to be loaded tomorrow ..

Thought it might be a fun thread to see what people are loading...

General Discussion / Awesome day shooting
February 03, 2024, 06:25:46 PM
Me and 3 other guys went down in the bottoms shooting today.. weather was decent but with a pretty good wind.. started out in the mid 30's and got into the low 60's this afternoon.. we had a 3 o'clock wind at 10 to 13 mph
Set my kyl out at 500. A 66% idps at 750. A 20x20 plate at 1005 and a 36x36 at 1295.. then moved the big one back to 1630..

I took 3 rifles.. a 25 creedmoor  a 6.5x284 and 300 win mag.. all 3 of my rifles shot fantastic.. the kyl rack at 500 was tough.. I connected on all targets on it with both my 25 and 6.5x284 except that 11/4" target.. couldn't get it.. lol
At 750 I shot a 11/2" 3 shot group with the 25 and a 2" group with the 6.5x284.. I hit good with both guns at a 1005 and 1295..I only shot the 300 win mag at a 1005 , 1295 and 1620.. made first round hits on the first two distances and a second round hit on the long one..

What I was happiest with was the numbers the new garmin was giving me.. the first pic is the numbers of the 25. Second is of the 6.5x284

Electronics / Software / Gadgets / Bit the bullet..
January 25, 2024, 04:24:15 PM
Well I broke down and upgraded my chrono this week.. euro optics had the garmin chrono listed saying they woul pay the tax on it and free shipping so I ordered one.. saved a little.. still a pricey little bugger.. lol.. ups guy dropped it off a little bit ago.. neat little unit.. was hoping to try it out this afternoon but we have dense fog here today.. visibility about 30 yards.. lol.. maybe tomorrow I can.. I got a ladder loaded for my 6.5x284 with 144 burger hybrids I'm wanting to shoot.. now I can get velocity data without the effects of the magneto speed..

Vintage Firearms / High dollar 😁
January 21, 2024, 10:17:15 AM
  Kinda proud of myself.. lol
In the early 80's I bought a Crossman model 1377 pellet pistol at a yard sale for 2 dollars.. thought it was pretty cool at the time.. stopped at the hardware store on the way home and got a tin of pellets.. I'm thinking on the way home the small birds are going to be in trouble with this bad boy.. hell I might even be able to kill rabbits with it..  :D
Get home and put a pellet in it and pumped it up the recommended 10 pumps and told my brother and sister to stand back.. this thing was going to be powerful.. had a tin can out in the yard about 20 feet away.. I took aim and got a good stance and pulled the trigger. (Pffft it went) the pellet hit the ground about 3 feet in front of me.. lol.. I look it over good and decide it needs some.. says right on the gun. Oil here.. put a few drops of 3 and 1 oil in it and tried again.. same results.. pellet barely came out and fell to the ground.. I tried everything I could think of but it wouldn't shoot.. frustrated I put it in the box and took it in the house and told mom it was junk.. she laughed and said that happens sometimes with yardsale stuff..

Move forward 40 years and somehow I still have this pellet pistol..
Drug it out this morning looking at it.. bored as heck.. too cold out to do anything I decide to take it apart and see if I can figure out why it won't pump up and shoot.. I tear it completely apart and their must be 7 or 8 little seals throughout the gun.. some are little o-rings and other were kinda like o-rings but not exactly.. I replaced them all with o-rings.. cleaned it all.. oiled what I thought needed oiled and put it back together with not much hope of it ever working.. lol.. grabbed the forearm of it and gave it a pump.. felt like it pumped.. gave it another.. it got a little harder. Next one a little harder yet.. 5 pumps in and it was getting hard to pump.. with no pellet in it a pulled the trigger.. this time it had all kinds of pressure come out the barrel.. it's going to shoot.. woo hoo.. now I gotta find some pellets.. I know it doesn't rank with the other firearms in this thread but to me it's pretty cool that I still have it for one and secondly I have no doubt it will shoot now..

Vintage Firearms / Remington model 33
January 12, 2024, 04:48:14 PM
This old rifle has been in my family since it was new.. Remington only made them for 3 years.. from 1932 to 1935.. my grand dad passed it down to my uncle.. I took it away from him as he kept it out in a old cattle barn.. it was in pretty bad shape with rust and some pitting of the steel.. he said it was fine.. that it still would drive tacks.. I told him I was taking it home and cleaning it up and wasn't bringing it back.. and didn't.. lol he was good with that and said he was going to give it to me any way one day..
I cleaned it up the best I could and cleaned the bore good and bolt.. the old rifle still just ha.mers with anything you feed it.. I will pass it down to my boy one day when it's time..

Couple pic's of the old rifle..

Bolt Action Rifles / Not a fan of 308 But !!
January 09, 2024, 03:44:49 PM
As the title says I'm not a fan of the 308 winchester cartridge but I came across 2 new boxes of 175 gr. Sierra hpbt bullets in my bullet stash.. only 30 cal. I have is my 300 win mag and I would never use these bullets in it.. however I do have 2 or 3 308 barrels that I have took off guns that I have bought for the actions.. one barrel is a 22 inch model 10 barrel that's threaded for a brake.. the barrel doesn't have 20 rounds down it.. anyway I pulled the barrel off a 204 ruger I built awhile back .. changed the bolt head and screwed the 308 barrel on it.. put it in my old stealth chassis.. vortex strike eagle scope on top.. magpul bi pod.. jet blast brake on the end.. she was ready to rock and roll..

Now to load these hpbt bricks.. lol.. bout like driving a dump truck..
I dug out some winchester brass I had and started running 50 of them through a lee sizer die.. time I was done I had 41.. 9 of them got pitched because they would either crush the necks down in the shoulder or just simply didn't feel right sizing them.. dug through the brass box and found 9 more that sized fine.. then ran the 50 good ones through a lee collet die.. trimmed them all .and chamfered the necks.. and primed them..
Next up was to use up some powder I don't use in anything else really.. decided to go with imr 4166.. manual called for 43 gr. Max charge.. so I seated the bullet .020 off the lands and loaded 5 with 42 gr. Cleaned the barrel and stuck it out the window with the bolt out and bore sighted it.. bolt back in and sent one.. my target paper had several holes in it all ready but they were from smaller calibers and figured it would be easy enough to see that big 30 cal hole. But couldnt.. lol. Sent 4 more and wasn't on paper.. grr. Load 5 more.. this time put the first one in the dirt berm.. ahhh way high.. finally get it on paper and zeroed.. 10 rounds down the clean pipe at this point.. load 3 more at 42 gr. And see how it grouped.. not good.. lol.. 2 inches all vertical.. load 3 more at 42.5 and send them. Much better.. 3/4 inch group.. so I load 3 more at 42.y gr and send them.. this time they just made one big hole in the paper.. woo hoo.. good enough to burn up these 200 bullets I have that otherwise I would never use.. and may have a little fun along the way in doing it.. when their gone I will pull the barrel and convert it back to a 204..

It's been raining here all day so no group picture right now cause I'm not going down there in the rain to take it but here's the gun..

And a pic of the brick I'm sending down it.. lol

Bolt Action Rifles / Factory savage
January 07, 2024, 10:03:53 AM
I got a model 10 chambered in 223 about 4 years ago.. bought it used at a lgs in ky. Brought it home and put a hawke scope on it calibrated for a 223. Shot it some and developed a load for it with sierra 69 gr. Match kings and re15 powder.. would pull it out and shoot it now and then but hadn't shot it for a year or more..
This morning it's cold and windy and cloudy and drug it out and thought I would bore scope it.. can't remember the last time I cleaned it.. it looked pretty ugly in there.. lol
So I get the thrro clean stuff and go to town on the barrel.. after a bit I had it back to bare metal.. course it's a typical savage barrel.. not pretty.. chatter marks in the grooves.. little pits now and then.. typical savage pipe.. makes you wonder how they ever group.. but they do..

After cleaning it I stuck it out the window and started shooting it.. took 6 foulers before it settled back in.. then I shot a 3 shot group.. 100 yards.. inch or so high and a fuzz to the left.. made the adjustment and bullseye the next one.. she's good to go again I believe..😁

General Discussion / Tinkering!!!
December 31, 2023, 01:58:00 PM
I went and bought me a new toy the other day.. I've had a lincoln ac/dc stick welder for 30 years I guess.. been wanting to upgrade for awhile.. knew nothing about mig welding but that's what I wanted to try and learn.. so I went and bought a millermatic 211.. I have to say I'm impressed with how easy it is to weld with.. I'm really liking it..

Tinkering around with it on some old scrap steel I decided it was time to build something.. so I decided to build me a better kyl rack for my 450 yard range.. swinger and all.. I went with 6 , 5, 4, 3 and 2 inch plates.. built it out of rebar and a form pin along with some pipe.. turned out OK I think.. still gotta paint it all and may go ahead and weld that chain with the 1 inch bolt head on it before I paint it.. pretty fun first project for the new mig.. my next project will be a welding table..

General Discussion / Cold bore !!

Josh from pursuit of accuracy has a interesting take on why that first shot is different than the rest.. he is all about the 22 rimfire game and I really enjoy his YouTube stuff.. here's his take on cold bore shots..

Reloading / 300 win mag and auddette ladder
November 25, 2023, 11:00:35 AM
Doing a auddette ladder with my win mag today.. 215 gr. Berger hybrid. Rl26 powder. Peterson brass.. shot at 450 yards.

if I'm reading this right purple(72.6), orange(72.9) and light green(73.2) is my node with 72.9 and 73.2 being positive compensation.. am I right or wrong.

General Discussion / Back in the saddle
October 27, 2023, 06:00:33 PM
As spring progressed and the corn got taller I was limited to 250 yards for about 4 months.. didn't take long for that to get boring for me.. I was down to shooting water bottle caps to keep it interesting and after awhile that to got boring... so I switched gears and bought a cz457 and that became something that was once again challenging.. went to a couple local matches and had quiet a bit of fun with the cz..

This week the farmer finally got the corn out of my fields and once again I can shoot my centerfire rifles and not feel like I'm just burning up components.. this evening I made some changes to my 430 yard range which consisted of moving it back all I could and can now shoot 450 yards.. had to move my dirt berm and while I did I increased the height and size of the berm and then moved some of my steel plates in front of the berm.. still have to put my plywood backer to hang paper on but I will get to that tomorrow.. for now here's my steel I have to shoot at.

General Discussion / Stretching a couple's legs..
September 03, 2023, 10:46:17 AM
Loaded up some targets this morning along with my 6 5 prc and 300 win mag and headed to the bottoms.. got down there and set up a 66%idps plate at 780 yards and another one at 1040.. then set a 20x20 plate at 1280 yards..

Started off with my prc and made first round hits at 780 and 1040 but took about 3 trys before I hit at 1280 with it.. made multihits on all targets with it.
Up next was my 300 win mag.. first round hits on all 3 targets with it and was happy with how both guns shot.. hadn't stretched any out for a good while.. wind was hitting .e in the back at 5mph from 5 to 7 oclock.. finally it got pretty hot and the mirage was getting pretty bad so I packed up and headed home.. enjoyed myself.. a target at 1280 with hits from my win mag

The last pic is from 1280 yards looking at my shooting position.. if you can see that building.. that's where I'm shooting from

From that second pic that tree line at the end of that road is where my 1280 target is..

General Discussion / Adjustable rear bag base
August 27, 2023, 09:33:29 AM
I shoot with a protektor rear bag and bipod and have always squeezed the ears on the bag to make fine adjustments for vertical.. a thread of chris's the other day got me to thinking about a good way to raise or lower the rear bag to get alignment to the target.. so this morning I tackled that project.. took me a old piece of 1/4 inch aluminium plate and shaped it how I wanted it and drilled and tapped 3 holes for the legs.. had a old junk caldwell front rest that I robbed the legs off of and ended up with this.. think it will work well..

General Discussion / Any idea!!!
August 15, 2023, 06:38:27 PM
A guy at work today said his father inlaw passed away awhile back and they was going through his things and he run across some old ammo the guy had.. asked if any one wanted it.. nobody did so I took it.. the box has some pretty cool old stuff.. some old 16 and 20 gauge shotgun shells. Couple boxes of 25 automatic . A box of 38 long colt. Some 222 rounds.. some boxes of 22 magnum rim fire. And a round I have never seen before.. hoping someone on here can tell me what they are.. the only markings on the case head is p c 43... any idea?

Bolt Action Rifles / New rifle
August 14, 2023, 03:00:28 PM
Went and bought me a new 22lr this morning.. got a cz457 american.. the dark walnut stock is just beautiful in my opinion.. 24 inch barrel.. smooth action.. I like it.. put a hawke 6x24x44 scope on it.. bout too windy to shoot it but I shot it some at 50 yards anyway.. here's a pic of the rifle and a couple 5 shot groups at 50 yards with a 12 mph cross wind..

General Discussion / To the members!!!
August 11, 2023, 10:43:54 PM
Earlier this evening we had a new member and his sole purpose was to start a bunch of malicious threads.. I contacted txcas right away and he was quick to get on here and remove the person.

I just wanted to remind everyone if you see something that just doesn't look right bring it to mine or daves attention.. we will get it taken care of soon as possible..

Thanks all..
