Bolt Action Rifles / ADL Restock
January 27, 2021, 06:42:37 PM
I have a March 1975 Remington 700 ADL (LA in 30-06). The metal is pristine and the rifle has seen less than 50 rounds down the barrel. Unfortunately the forearm of the original Remington stock has enough warpage to be a functional deficit and I'm looking to restock with something in a laminate. All the offerings on Stockys Stocks are on back order, so I checked Boyd's and found several available.

Can someone with personal experience give me their pros and cons on the Boyd product? I would be using their Heritage or Classic stock,  not the new fancy all in one that they recently start making.
Thanks.

Bad time for NRA to be "restructuring". Seems like the bankruptcy is more of a legal move than a lack of funds.

Competition / Longrange Rendezvous
January 10, 2021, 01:54:15 PM
It's encouraging to see the advent of two new major national competitions scheduled for next year. @rardoin  has described the new F Class event:

"An F-Class Points Series event, the V² Finale is conducted as a 3-day tournament, with exceptional sponsors. Points, seed rankings, and invites are based off of competitors year long performance at qualifying LR matches around the country. In 2021, the V² Finale will be held 11-13 of June at Dead Zero Shooting Range in Tennessee." (from rardoin)

This info sounds like the hoops you might have to go through to qualify for the PGA Championship.
Conversely, the up coming new benchrest competition might be more like the US Open golfing event.

The "Longrange Rendezvous"is open to all shooters who register before the 98 competitor limit is reached. Through the four day event, each competitor can only use one rifle under 22 pounds.  Aggregate scores will be used to select a list of 14 shooters who compete for final honors. Scores will be entered from 16 targets, shot at either 600 or 1000 yards. The top 14 competitors will do a shoot off for the final 7 positions to determine winners. The competition will be held at the Vapor Trail Valley range in Missouri June 16 thru  20.  Several of us from this forum have gotten our registrations in and I believe a few more spots are still open. The total registration fee for the week is $350:  $200 pre-registration followed by $150 at the match.  The competitors who are coming, hail from just about every state in the nation - they are the cream of the crop.   I am going to put my best competitive foot forward, but will consider it a win just to meet and shoot with some of the very best long distance benchresters in the nation. It's a long trip requiring a lot of preparation and time commitment.

Hopefully this will become a yearly event. ????

Bolt Action Rifles / 308???? Why!
January 06, 2021, 09:09:21 PM
Dadajack posted earlier that he has a 308 Christiansen Arms in the near future. Got me thinking about the cartridge. Started a list of pros and cons in my head. The most obvious pro is ammo availability. Curious what others would list as pros and cons.

Reloading / Flash Hole Diameter
January 04, 2021, 01:21:04 PM
A few years back I purchased a lot of early 6.5 Creedmoor brass from Alpha Munitions.  After analysis, I developed a healthy respect for the quality this new company was putting on the market.

https://www.65creedmoor.com/index.php?topic=9657.msg103376#msg103376

Since then I've remained a follower and fan of their efforts devoted to simply producing the best brass available for reloading. Recently they modified their brass production to develop what they call OCD brass. For obvious reasons I knew they were my company of preference with something carrying a reference to "obsessive compulsive disorder". ????
Actually it stands for "optimized case design" and it's not just a marketing ploy - these guys are dead serious about minimizing primer pocket degradation with multiple firing cycles. Read up on it if you like because I'm digressing from the subject of this thread - flash hole diameter.

Alpha recently got into the production of the BR case and it's variants - BRA, Dasher, etc. Interestingly, their cases came out with a 0.080 flash hole diameter instead of the traditional 0.059 or 0.060 flash hole found in Norma and Lapua offerings. This bothered me, but I purchased anyway because it's Alpha brass and I wanted their quality for my efforts in competition.

Late last week my curiosity got the better of me and I reached out to Tom and Bob at Alpha with the question - why the larger flash hole? Got my answer today from Bob. "Better, more consistent ignition". To me that should correlate to lower SDs which is always a worthwhile quest. Bob tells me Alex Wheeler is doing independent testing to document that statement and will publish his results soon.

WOW - I think this is another example of Alpha's quest to push the envelope and not just follow accepted tradition. Great company!

Well it's been a crazy year, and it's not quite over yet.

To all of my friends here:

Merry Christmas to you and your family, from me and mine! While we put our stress and worries aside for a heartbeat to celebrate Christ's birth, I hope you all find a little of the peace and joy of the season. It's a good time to be thankful for even the things we take for granted.

This forum has been a source of knowledge and camaraderie for me almost every day of the past year. Thank you for the sharing and friendship. And a special thought of appreciation to Carlos for providing the site and our three great monitors for keeping us focused and moving forward.

MERRY CHRISTMAS YA'll! ????

AR Variants / 6 ARC Upper
October 20, 2020, 07:20:41 PM
So I have a Rock River Arms ATH chambered in 5.56. I've gotten interested in the 6ARC round which is supposed to be adaptable to the AR15 configuration. Does anyone have any experience with an upper chambered for this cartridge? Who is making these uppers?

Reloading / Tikka, 143, and RL16
September 18, 2020, 08:38:47 PM
Getting ready to start load development on a 24" Tikka barrel. Convenient components for me are 143gr ELD-X Bullets and RL16. Anyone already using this combo?  Are Tikka barrels truly slow? Any pressure issues getting the 143 up to the low 2800s with a 24" tube?

General Discussion / IBS Expansion
February 15, 2020, 08:22:03 PM
The International Benchrest Shooters have expanded their long range bench rest goals to include a Tactical designation. This opens the door for those shooters who favor a tactical rifle build and want to push its competitive capabilities in 600 and 1000 yard matches. I've included the rules for this class below. This is the first year this has been offered and will be conducted on a trial basis during 2020. I think I will allow this group at our CRC single day matches to open the opportunity for more shooters and to participate in the experiment. If it takes off we will start separate matches for these folks.

Jerry

INTERNATIONAL BENCHREST SHOOTERS
TACTICAL CLASS RULES
The intent and purpose of the TACTICAL CLASS is to promote inclusion within the IBS of another shooting discipline. While our initial goal was to create a set of rules that promoted the creation of the most accurate benchrest rifles possible, we wish to welcome those additional disciplines wishing to expand their knowledge, testing and friendly competition within. The 1000 and 600 yard Tactical Class is designed to help shooters that choose to use Tactical style rifles in a bench rest style match therefore realizing the absolute accuracy potential of this type rifle. The Tactical Class will be under IBS Guidance and 2020 will begin a trial or test run period of one year.
Tactical Class Rules are as follows:
All shooters must comply with all applicable rules associated with IBS relays and safety concerns.
Bolt action and Semi-Automatic rifles will be allowed. Semi-Automatics rifles must employ "Empty Chamber Flags" when not involved in an active relay.
All rifles must be fully functioning and capable of feeding loaded ammunition to the barrel/action from a magazine. No single shot rifles allowed.
All rifles may be fired in a single shot fashion. Caliber may not exceed .4 in barrel groove diameter.
Muzzle Brakes and Suppressors are allowed. (Range Owners may choose to prohibit rearward discharging muzzle brakes for safety reasons)
A bipod or sand bags may be used to support the front end of the rifle. No mechanical front rest will be allowed. Competitors using bipods must have rubber feet or protect the benches from damage. A sand bag may support the rear end of the rifle providing it does not restrict the rearward movement of the rifle during recoil.
All equipment used in the Tactical Class is subject to inspection by referees at any time during a match. Range Officials reserve the right to not allow participation due to any safety concerns.
All Matches, whether 600 yard or 1000 will follow their "Light Gun Course of Fire" as written in the current LR Rule Book.
All Ranges will employ the respective 600 and 1000 yard IBS SOY systems as described in the current LR Rule Book and current SOY Programs. For 600 and 1000 yard competition, in the year 2020 only, at the end of the year, only the smallest single target Group and the highest single target Score will be recognized as a Record. In 600 yard competition, at the end of the year, only the smallest Group Agg and the highest Score Agg Record will be recognized as a Record. All other IBS rules pertaining to Records will be adhered to.
All Ranges have the option of running the "Tactical" Relays concurrently with other scheduled Relays or in Relays by themselves. The IBS LR committee will establish an independent SOY record keeping system inclusive of individual target records for score and group. Records will be verified according to present IBS LR rules.
