There are some good deals out there on used optics on some of the competition/accuracy forums. I've picked up both NF and Vortex scopes for as much as 1/3 to 1/2 off retail. I have found that many upgrade their optics over time and sell what they have. You just need to be patient and once you decide what you want then start looking. I dabble a bit in F Class style shooting and regularly shoot my 6.5 Creed in mid-range using a NF Benchrest scope that I picked up for under $900. I really like it.

I've been looking at a .308 to shoot FT/R medium range matches. Only .308 and .223 are allowed. If I bring my 6.5 I have to compete in open class.

I wonder if it will pick up rocks? The way things are going with ammo and components that's all we'll have left to do is throw rocks.

Wife and I are avid birders. That keeps us outside in the woods and fields 12 months of the year. Planning a trip to Alaska this summer if Covid permits to check out the birds and critters. Nothing like stalking a new species in a new area and sitting down for lunch in a nice remote spot with a container of grilled dove breasts, some homemade bread and a good glass of red wine.

General Discussion / A little plinking with the 6.5
November 29, 2020, 10:08:56 AM
Did a little plinking this morning at 600 yards at a F Class paper target. This was a 10 shot group in 15 minutes. I should have done 20 shots but The BOSS wanted me to take her to the store.  >:(

I scored it a 99-5X.  I have less than 50 rounds down the tube and shooting 140 grain Berger's. Just got to love the Creed.  ;D
I'm still working on this load and I think the trigger (Timney) is a bit stiff. I have it set as low as it will go at 1.5 pounds. I think if it was a bit lighter my groups would tighten up. Anyway, I'm blaming the trigger.  :D

Hunting / Re: Piling 'em up in NC

Here in se NC most of the yearling (1.5 yr.) bucks are spikes. But by 2.5 you rarely ever see a spike and most are small 6 and 8 pointers (between the ears). It's amazing what one year can do. When I was working as a biologist I would age literally hundreds of bucks a season and it was surprising how few 2.5 and older bucks were spikes. So, to say that a spike will always be a spike was not supported by the data I collected.

Good luck Sportacus!  We own a 100 acres that we hunt and so far we haven't had any major issues. I guess the fact that we have a range right down the middle helps a bit. Besides standard NO TRESSPASSING signs we also the entire perimeter posted with big red signs that read DANGER IMPACT AREA, KEEP OUT RIFLE RANGE.
It seems to help.

That's why in one of the pics you can see part of the kitchen right behind the skinning rack. LOL!

That big spike was 8.5 years old! Amazing how he survived that long and the fact that you can't control genetics in a wild deer herd as I doubt he was a virgin.  :D
All of the deer were taken with Wby Vanguards in 6.5 Creed loaded with Speer 140 grain Hot-Cor bullets.

Reading all of these comments again makes we want to take mine out. I haven't shot mine in quite awhile. With all of the rain we've had this year the far end of my range has been under water most of the time. I do have a 20 inch disc hanging at 900 so I may have to ding that a few times if the deer hunters will let me. LOL!
