Gunsmithing / Re: New build in the works

Grant,
My stick is a custom from Alamo Precision. Defiance Anti, 24" Proof and a Trigger Tech. Strictly a deer rifle. Won't take the shot past 400. Need my victim dead where he stands. Applaud you long range shooters. I am too cheap to burn up components/barrels. ;D

Hunting / Re: Killed a turkey yesterday

Thank you for the congrats. Have fallen in love with the 20 gauge with #9 TSS. Used to be a serious turkey hunnter. Chased them all over the South and Midwest. Healing nicely from the 360 spinal fusion. Will get serious again. Serious enough to put together a dedicated 20 gauge turkey gun.

A little humor. My favorite mouth call was the Knight & Hale Super Hen. Has not been made for years. Had squirreled a few back in the frig. Thursday night, opened one I had marked 2007. Seventeen years old. Soaked it under warm water. Went in the garage and did a few yelps. Yep, I still got it. Let him gobble 4-5 times before I made a peep. Soft yelps. He answered. When he hung up, I cut/cackled. Bird lost his mind. Shut up and let him come.

The best part. I am still limited physically. Was sitting on a dove bucket under a cedar tree on uneven ground. When I touched the little 20 off, tossed my wide a** flat on my back. He was flopping and I was limping. Like a scene from Gunsmoke with Chester moving with a purpose.

Hunting / Killed a turkey yesterday

Did it "old school." Mouth call and factory Stoeger 20 gauge with APEX 8.5 TSS shot. No vest full of my crap. Look like a tinker when I wear it. No decoy.
It was classic. Called him from a long way off. He hung up at 75 yards and was screaming his head off. I got quiet. When he closed to within 40-45  I busted him.10.5 " beard and 1.25 inch spurs. Probably a two year old.

Grant,
The smith that built my rifle said run the 180's between 2850 and 2900 and the critters would "melt." That speed with accuracy is our goal.

Grant,
Anxious to see your results with H1000. Made some 180 Hybrid loads with H4831sc last deer season with 210M. Know we can do better with H1000 now that we got our hands on some magnum primers.

Think both my places, TN and LA safe from development in my lifetime. Surrounded by Kisatchie National Forest in LA. Buffered by old time farmers in TN. But, when they die, heirs usually turn the heirloom properties into quick cash. Sad to see the cracker boxes popping up. "Stay off my lawn!"  ;D

Showed H4350, H1000, H4831sc in stock at 0900 CST.

Took a scenic route through the farm country of SW Kentucky this morning on my way to get new tires for the truck. Saw a Amish farmer cutting hay with a team of four. Amazing how much ground those boys can work with draft horses.

Brain damage caused by rifles with brakes is the least of my worries. Most of my brain damage from other stupid stuff young men do. ;D Wear ear pro even when I hunt. Only use two with brakes; 35 Whelen and 7 PRC.

Arrived at a reloading brother's house this afternoon, maybe. Adult signature required. He is in KY chasing turkeys. I have been running the road doing old Army stuff. Headed for TN Thursday to chase turkeys on my place. When the 12 gauge smoke clears, we will get serious about 6.5 CM, 6.5 PRC and 7 PRC deer loads for the upcoming season.

Reloading / Re: Stoked first load coming together

Welcome Ol'Skunk. Have never held a X-Bolt in any caliber that was not a shooter. I have a 2015 Shot Show All Weather left hand in 6.5 CM. Likes ELD-X, AB and 130-140 Bergers. Have gathered up Speer HotCors, Gold Dots and Impacts. Will use H4350 and try to get accurate load running around 2700 FPS. Price was right. They should be poison on deer and feral hogs. Good luck.

Several outlets have H4350 eight pounders.  I have procrastinated for days. Pulled the trigger with Graf & Son's.  $390.  Shielded my eyes when the HAZMAT and shipping were added.  Reality.  It is not going to get cheaper and don't know when it will be available again.

Picked one up Friday from LGS. 24" octagon barrel. Buckhorn sights that I can see clearly. Will clean the factory funk out of the barrel and start shooting. Something handy to carry in case I bump a hog or coyote.
Impressed by the smooth action and excellent trigger.

Reloading / Creedmoor Sports-ADG Brass
March 23, 2024, 04:11:07 PM
Have been loading 6.5 PRC in used Hornady brass for a couple of years now.  No complaints.  Velocity and accuracy.  Keep going back to Long Range Only and Ultimate Reloader recommendations.  ADG.  Ordered 100 from Creedmoor Sports.  Spendy.  The IRS Death Angel passed me over.  Holding 200 new Lapua. 200+100=Quality brass cases till I am gone.
