308???? Why!

A friend up north ordered some AR 10 lowers recently and wanted to know if I wanted in. Being doubtful the common man will be allowed to own one much longer & never having an AR 10 before I said sure.

After much discussion we both decided on the 7.62 / .308 round for the obvious reasons of a more likely ammo availability (hopefully at some point) and barrel life.
Will be a very slow build I'm guessing between ammo, component & parts being what they are currently.

Got a lower parts kit and a couple mags inbound the other day and we're waiting on lowers. I'll start shopping for uppers eventually but I'm sure that's going to be an exercise in futility for a while.

Worthwhile effort if you can get r done.

Good idea to get it before you can't. At least get the lower and then everything else is just parts. Start it as a .308 and then you can get  other uppers later if you wanted like a 6.5 Creed or .243 or 6 Creed etc.

One thing with large frame ARs, unlike the AR15s, is that the large frame aren't built to one standard so not every upper will work with every lower. There are different specs. Look into that before buying an upper.

Might happen quicker than you think.  Once you have your lower together, check Palmetto State Armory every couple of days.  I have grabbed some crazy deals on complete uppers when they run their daily specials.  Jonesing for a 224 Valkyrie or 6 ARC
upper when my Aunt Mickie dies and leaves me a million dollars.  LOL
If you have the shot, take it.

Dave,
Apologize.  Should have been paying closer attention. Too long in the Army.  AR stamps 5.56 in my unreconstructed brain.  Probably because I carried some variant most of my adult life. Same holds true.  If you build a AR-10 lower, stay on Palmetto State Armory like a dog on a bone. Their AR-10 uppers get great reviews.

You will most likely need a PSA lower also as they fall into the area of uppers a d lowers in large frame not going together. What brand is the lower you are buying? Can you buy a matching upper receiver as well?

DHuffman

Not sure what brand the lower is. I'm basically following the experienced friends lead here. I'll post up as soon as I know what I'm dealing with.

I've built a number of AR-15's and the parts all seem to be pretty much plug and play.  However, I've have friends that built AR-10's and the same doesn't apply.  Apparently, not all AR-10 parts will play well with each other.  So I would recommend doing some diligence on part (ie upper, lower, barrel, BCG) compatibility so that when you get it assembled, it all works as expected.

This thread reminds me that I have an Aero Precision AR15 FDE lower in the gun safe.  Was going to build something, but they turned prohibited here sadly.

Talked to the friend and I need to be shopping DPMS Gen 1 compatible for an upper so I'll start looking or snagging parts.

I'm thinking an Aero M5 upper from everything I've read now.

I've got an Aero AR15 lower under a homeade parts kit upper I'm going to go shoot this morning. What state are you in that's prohibited them or are you one of our northern neighbors?

I built a 308 with one of their builder sets a couple years ago. It's pretty sweet, but I had the wrong spring in when I first put it together, and the bolt velocity was very high. Putting the higher power buffer spring in resolved all of the cycling issues. I also used an adjustable block to allow for suppressed use as well. Still havent completely fleshed out all of the settings for it, but it is not 100% reliable when switching from suppressed to unsuppressed. It doesn't really matter, as long as it is reliable suppressed, which is the way I shoot it 99% of the time anyway.

I have a lot of guns... There, I said it.

Ya up here in Canada. I may build it up with cheap parts just because, even though it can't leave the house.

Don't know how your laws are written, but in CA, where Assault Rifles are prohibited from sale and if you have one, it must be register, they have defined an AR as having a set of features: Pistol grip, moveable stock, grenade launcher, front pistol grip, flash suppressor).  Well, it is possible to build an AR-15 with these elements removed (ie Thordsen for stock and pistol grip) which makes it legal...at least for now.  Don't know if Canada did something similar.
