Reloading / Speer Impact

New release for hunters.  Out of stock everywhere.  Think it their challenge to ELD-X.  We will continue to chase.  Will load 6.5 PRC around 2800 and 6.5 CM maxxed.  Should be a grocery getter.  I am leery of ELD-X from 6.5 PRC at 100 or less.  Smokes the critter but bullet literally evaporates.  Have mentioned before.  The PRC is now reserved for long pokes past 200.

Awesome news!  All you comp Ninja's fly under the radar.  "No brag, just fact."  :)

chef,
I forgot about the Timney's.  That is what I installed in several Ruger American Predator's before MCARBO hit the scene.  Now I install the spring for someone that wants to keep the bladed trigger or does not want to spend the money for a Timney.  All my Rugers, even two M77's wear Timneys.

Hunting / The Doldrums: A Opus
May 14, 2022, 03:15:07 PM
Hate this time of the year.  Turkey season was a respite, but that is done. Spring/summer food plot maintenance done.  Attention grabber.  Diesel and fertilizer prices off the charts.  Let's Go Brandon!  Too much invested over the years to just let them go.

If you read my previous posts from last season, went 5 for 6 with my Alamo Precision 6.5 PRC.  Longest shot was 130 yards.  Too much gun up close.  Kills the he** out of them with factory ELD-X but there is no blood trail.  I prefer a "Stevie Wonder" path of crimson to lead me to the prize.  Have worked up some excellent 6.5 PRC loads with 156 EOL.  Won't carry that stick unless opportunity for a long poke.

Going back to the 6.5 girl that brung me to the dance.  Playing with 140 Hot Cors, 140 Gold Dots and 135 Classic Hunters from several rifles.

Trying mightily to break myself from the behind the shoulder heart shot and do high shoulder.

Pray for me.

Steve,
Don't know if I mentioned on your original post.  Since you plan to shoot long, recommend you install a MCARBO replacement rigger spring.  Has made every Ruger American and Browning X Bolt I have ever put one in induce tears of joy.

Steve,
Welcome.  Split my time between central LA and middle TN.  My place is 2.5 hours west of Nashville on the KY line.  Familiar with Winchester.  You will enjoy your time here whether you are a comp guy or a hunter or both.  Gentlemen with knowledge that will make your head hurt and guidance that will trim down your bank account.

VA,
Good luck.  MO is still a reliable hunting destination for Eastern wild turkeys. I say again, management/enforcement the keys.  MO does it. Shred them heads and be safe.

VA,
The Duckettes will talk about their addiction, but nothing compares to a mature gobbler, screaming in your face at 20 yards.  Man beats wild.

Hunting / Turkeys Are Winning
April 09, 2022, 03:11:09 PM
Have ventured forth into the darkness three mornings.  No gobbles from the roost.  Have heard a few but all far away.  Good with it.  Turkey numbers on the decline in most of the Southern states.  Wildlife managers have done some positive things.  Reduced the bag limits and pushed the opener back two weeks to provide breeding opportunity for more hens.

As a Wildlife Management undergrad, I helped trap and stock a lot of the birds in central Louisiana.  Cannon nets in Sabine Parish on the eastern shore of Toledo Bend reservior in the early 70's.

Some old story.  Habitat loss, poaching/over hunting and nest raiders.  Will hunt my place in TN next week.  Lots of birds. TN does a better job of management/enforcement. Weather looks to be cool/wet.  Not good.  Will go when I can and hope to work a few. Not as mad at them as I was as a younger man.

Bolt Action Rifles / Re: Advice For First Time Buyer
April 03, 2022, 12:04:35 PM
darmento,
Welcome. Tikka, Bergara and X Bolt in no particular order. Have not seen a 6.5 CM yet in any of those flavors that was not a sub 1/2 rifle.  With premium factory fodder.  If you reload, you will make it even tighter. Hopefully you can find a shop where can you handle all three to help in your decision.

Reloading / Re: Loading 95 gr vmax for predaters

cray,
A belated welcome.  Makes me happy that you are liquidating these monsters, wherever they are.  We can't get the classic long range pokes because of heavy timber.  Usually tag team.  One shooter packing a 6.5 CM with deer loads and the back-up man armed with a 12 gauge loaded with T's or #4 buck.  The scatter gun man usually gets the shot because they break out of the brush in your face.

Randall,
Your last post kinda reinforced my thesis of your situation. LGS wanting to sell guns (big ticket) and not trifle with the "little" stuff that we all want and need.
