Post by: gman47564 on July 02, 2021, 09:51:51 PM
If so what did you shoot today?

Seen this on another forum.. thought i would start one here.. post what you shot today if you did any shooting.. and post any day you shoot if you want.. pic's are nice but not necessary..

For me i shot my savage stealth evolution today.. sent about 35 rounds down range at a 100 and 250 yards.. cant see my 300 or 430 yard targets do to the corn getting too tall.. the guns off tune just a little do to the aggressive cleaning i gave it here awhile back.. i think i need to go back to my original load.. will find out tomorrow as i loaded 10 rounds for it this evening..

I shot a squirt gun!  Much too hot here and it was also very windy. Hopefully I can reload tomorrow and shoot in the next few days.

Going shooting on Sunday after work. Supposed to be a bit cooler. Going to be shooting my 223, 338, and 6.5 creed and buddies 6.5 creed. Rough day of work today at 41°C. Thank God it was only 48°C in the shop with the big compressors and everything else running. :o

I went out yesterday afternoon sighted in my 223 Tikka in a oryx chassis. I put a new vortex venom scope on it.
I also had a big of fun with the 22lr Tikka T1x, shot it out to 300 yard's. 14.3 mils
My other job for the day was to develop a load for fire forming first fired 308 to 6XC. I should have taken a picture of the group's my lower load shot as it was much better than expected.
Also my standard thing to do every time I go to our range is to shoot the barricade first thing and last thing.

Changed the load on my evolution 6 creedmoor a little today.. added .2 tenths of rl 16. Back to the original charge. I had dropped the charge several months ago by .2 tenths to keep it in tune.. withe the aggressive cleaning I gave it i needed to add that back.. the change helped.. got it back under half moa.. (top left two groups)
Wanted better so i did a seating test from .015 off to the .040 off in my first two groups in .005 increments.. looks like .025 off is where it needs to be.. thats around 1/4 moa.. with throat growth in the rifle that puts me back to almost my original load and jump.. target is at 250 yards

I shot my 6.5 CM yesterday at 200 yards to confirm the load for a 600 practice session on Monday.  Grant, you hit on something that I was noodling on.  I had cleaned the 6.5 well (followed your process since it had about 1500 rounds thru it).  So I took my trusted load and shot it with the labradar in place.  I lost a good 30 fps and was out of the sweet spot.  I shot 50 rounds and by the end, it had picked up about 15-20 fps and was just starting to shoot well.  So now what to do.  I could keep the barrel clean and increase the load to compensate since 50 rounds in a match is very doable or I could let the barrel foul enough to get back to the prior load.  Seems like starting from a clean barrel each time would be the better and more controlled way to proceed.

Bob my 6 creed lost about the same as your 6.5 did.. 30 fps or so.. i have about 60 rounds loaded with the lesser charge weight.. im going to load a 100 rounds (it may take 150) with the original charge.. the one i shot today.. im thinking by the time i shoot the 100 rounds up then the lesser charged rounds should be good to go again.. once them are shot up i will give it another bare metal cleaning and just shoot the original load and maintain the cleaner barrel and compensate for lands growth as it moves forward..

I wonder then, barrel break in speed increase, is actually not barrel break in, well same effect but different cause.

Quote from: LeadHammer on July 04, 2021, 12:03:11 AMI wonder then, barrel break in speed increase, is actually not barrel break in, well same effect but different cause.

Well somewhat maybe.. break in is more about smoothing up the edges and filling the little imperfections in the bore.. along with heat cycling it to some extent.. the results of that is increased speed.. when doing this deep clean it takes you back to the speeds you were getting after break in and the speed it gained during break in.. with 100's of rounds down the barrel that hard carbon keeps building up and restricting the bore a little more to the point you have gained another 30 or 40 fps.. which has more than likely took you out of your node.. to fix this you can drop the charge weight a little or clean that stuff out thats causing the increase in speed.. or keep a really close eye on your barrel and speed and maintain the cleanliness it needs to maintain its speed. Easier said than done.. lol.. this is all just my observation and opinion.. take it for what its worth..

I agree.  I have some loaded at my old charge.  Once they are gone, I'll do another cleaning and then increase the charge .2/.3g and then work to keep the barrel clean.  This should provide a consistent starting point for each time out.  I'm going to try this process with the 6.5CM and see how it holds up in the matches.

I have never had a quality aftermarket barrel, how rough are they inside, figured they would be burr free. Are they not lapped?

Their not rough at all. Their lapped as well but theirs still sharp endges that your first few rounds wear off..

With that Alpha brass coming, you'll have to shoot farther
out to see anything but one hole groups.

Working up a load for a 8.25 twist Bartlien, 27" full 1.250" barrel.
It shot some 6.5x47L imp in the Panda, reseated leftover Rendevous ammo small the other day. Shot two ladders this morning in a 10 mph headwind and didn't have enough neck tension so I'm going to repeat the two ladders and maybe run a set on Varget to get to the mid-upper 2800s

Shot my 7 saum imp. had the load down to 3 choices (I thought)
I've got 197 rounds on it now. Looks like the barrel might have sped up
and shooting groups of 4, it would spit one out.
Going back to the next lower node ( these were hot)
and adjust the seating depth to hopefully get rid of the flier.

Headed out to the 600 yard range this morning.  It sure was nice and quiet on the road at 6:30am on a Holiday.  I usually shoot the benchrest guns at these sessions but decided to bring the Savage Elite Precision 6mm CM.  So I was the only one on a Bi-pod and a bag but I still shot well.  I think I may have even ended up with the smallest group...not sure, wasn't really keeping track, but everyone was getting into the 3-4 inch range.  There was some wind but not too bad.  I was shooting 109g Berger Hybrids loaded with Rl-23 in Peterson SRP brass.  Beautiful way to start the day.  Got home before it broke 90deg.

I had some time so I thought I would go back and continue the load development on the 243 WSSM.  It has been almost a year since I put this project on the back burner.

Went out and shot a ladder which turned out to be too much for the 115 DTAC's.  As I got past 3000 fps, I started getting shots that didn't show up on the target.  For a 5 shot group I may only see 2-3 holes.  I can only assume that they came apart before reaching the target.   My next load will be a bit slower, something just over 2900 fps and I'll try some of the 110g SMKs that I have.

Bob did any of the suspect rounds make a different sound than the ones that made it to the target.. the ones that i have had go puff made a real loud noise when they come apart.. louder than the gun going off..

I didn't notice anything that sounded different.  I just didn't have any holes in the target....and I looked all over the board to verify that they didn't go astray but they were not to be found.  I guess it is possible that they could have missed the target board completely...very strange.
Title: Re: Did you shoot today?
Post by: jvw2008 on July 09, 2021, 07:40:19 PM
I'm thinking that if they were off the board you would have seen at least a few of the splashes.

The few blow ups I've seen could be heard if you were listening. More like a soft report (like a 22 round) mixed into the normal rifle report. The loudness may be dependent on how far out they go before disintegrating.
Title: Re: Did you shoot today?
Post by: gman47564 on July 09, 2021, 07:55:36 PM
May be dependent on where your at.. i dunno.. when it happens here at home its loud..

I've never had this happen before....so I didn't know what to expect.  I didn't realize this was happening until I went and looked at the target closely.  Wish I had known this sooner and paid more attention.  lol

Didnt shoot much today.. 5 rounds.. i worked up a nice load for my dasher in that alpha brass running 3010 fps with a 105 vld.. but i was concerned that i might be hurting my virgin brass even though it didnt seem like it was.. any way gregg and jerry had both told me their should be a lower node around 2960 and 2980.. my velocity ladder showed a small flat spot at 2967.. so i loaded 5 rounds at that charge and shot them. The cold bore shot was high and right a 1/4 inch the other 4 made a single hole that was small.. ???? thats what i will fire form the rest of my brass with.. thanks for the node location guys..

I shot two days this week.

On Monday, I shot the 6.5-284 Norma at a 1000 yard NBRSA practice session.  The wind was not as bad as I've seen here but it was tricky.  My best group was 9".  Most were in the 16-18" range....not one of my better outings. ...but everyone was struggling.  I stopped shooting groups and used the time to study the flags and shot a sighter and see where it went.  I was able to start getting a feel for the let-ups and holds needed to adjust to the changing conditions.

Today, I did some load development with the 6mm Dasher at 200 yards.   Did some fine tuning on the loads and continue to be impressed.  I'm going to take my best load and shoot the 1000 yards practice again this coming Monday.   A couple targets below.

Today i shot a 6.5 creedmoor.. started a thread about it and my brake. This afternoon i shot my 6br a few times. Its shooting the 107 match kings really well with rl15. Heres a 10 shot group at a hundred yards and a 3 shot group at 250 yards.. pretty happy with how its shooting.. and i also got a 12 round metal br magazine for it and it cycled flawlessly.  Thats my pinky finger in the pic. A dime would cover both groups but didnt have a dime on me..  :D

I shot today, first time in a long time at a farther distance.  Set up for 500 yards first. ( 6.5CM ) I was having a bit of trouble with my app, just a bit off, but adjusted for it. Shot ok, but could not get 1/2" moa.  The wind was not strong, from 1-7.5 mph, but it kept changing direction lol. Blowing on the left side of my face and 180 degrees different at the flags at the target. The flags at the target were also switching up to 180 degrees on occasion, but usually only around 40-90 degrees shift. I had my 76 year old dad with me and talked him into shooting my rifle at 500.  He was nervous but after my shot, he put one 1" away from it. He was pretty happy.
After shooting 10/22's at 100 yards for awhile, we moved to 800 with the 6.5. I took 3 shots and was missing.....scratched my head and looked at my app................ then noticed I had it set to meters since I was at the range last time doh!
I guess thats why my 500 was out a bit. My next shot I hit on the 18.5" square plate but quite low, measured via reticle then noticed the farmer 2 fields behind my target had moved in to combine.  Oh well still had fun but had a lot of mistakes, at least the farming will be complete all around my shooting field starting tomorrow.
I found my velocity was set off on my app as well, I must have been messing with it earlier. Was why my 800 impact was that low. Once I fixed that, my mils data lined up with my dope and measured target via reticle.
Can't wait to get out there as soon as possible.

Ok, so the forecast was rain, but I decided to go out anyway as the weatherman often is wrong up here. ( and he was )
I made it to my spot, set up the target and bench at 804 yards to start, ( hoping my data from the other day would get me close. )

My first round was a low right hit, so the wind way stronger at the target than I thought, the wind at the bench was 1 mph from 7:00. My next 5 rounds were 8.5", so not very good but was a good start.

The wind was still low so after spraying the gong I proceeded to head back to the 1000 mark, it ended up being 1039 as 1000 was putting me on a downslope hillside. Ok cool , it would be my farthest hit if I make it.

My first two attempts at 1039 were misses to the right, but I was able to see them through the scope, and measured them. My next 3 shots were great for me and honestly the shots felt pretty good as well.

Once again after painting up the target, I went to try again. Unfortunately I was missing to the left and a tad high, missed twice. ( gong is 18.5" square ) I was dumb on my flags at the target and sure enough the wind had shifted, even hough it was still quite calm. However after measuring my misses again, my next three shots were fantastic. So I at least know my stock rifle can still shoot, and my loads are ok, but I also know I can't read wind for crap lol. I will start another thread on that.

I was shooting Berger's  and my Leica said 1039 yards.  I was surprised how close Ballistic arc app was though.

In long range competition there are two schools of thought. Trust your last sighter then run your records as quick as you can and then there are the wind readers that try to pick the repeat condition. Ive never had any luck with the latter.

Nice pictures and good shooting!

Yep its a good spot for sure and I'm glad the generous farmer lets me on. It is a bit hilly, ( does not show up well in the pic ) so it seems to swirl about a bit, and it faces West, so evening shooting can be tough, but I'm not complaining. It was also nice because the crop was off early this year. Next year it will be taken off late though, as it will probably be Canola.

Terrain or lay of the land has a big impact on wind as you've noticed.

I may have another spot, a different farmer, but it will likely face East or South. I think it may be flatter. I will have to try and get ahold of him this fall, I used to weld for him way back in high school, and get hunting permission from him every year so know him well enough.
What direction do most big shooting ranges face, like Avery and all those?

Google maps shows North East for that one.
It seems our Saskatchewan long range club shoots North East as well, interesting.

North / south orientation is the preference but it doesn't always work out that way due to other geographic limitations. I believe the Deep Creek 1000 yard range gets some easterly exposure and sun issues for the benches up until about 10 am. That range is laid into a mountain side and there is really only one way it fits well.

It's a great range. Pretty country. Lots of trees and some tricky winds generated by the hilly terrain. Most importantly though - just a great group of dedicated long range shooters there. I haven't been to a lot of different ranges but it is sure my favorite.

It's a looong  drive from Colorado. ????

Deep Creek lays almost dead east, Elbow Lake lays straight west, Gopher mostly north IIRC, Hunters Pointe and Vapor Trail Valley to the south.

So whatever fits, my 600/1000 yard spot in ND started out shooting SW then a farmer put up a grain bin and then they drilled an oil well so i shoot NW now. At home in SD i shoot mostly to the SE.

It definitely varies lots then I see. Makes sense. Wind wise my current spot is good as we get lots of west winds, probably better to shoot into that and deal with the sun instead.

A racing buddy of mine wanted to go shoot AR's today.  SacValley has a great steel range with Chickens, Turkeys, Pigs and Rams all the way out to 550 yards.  So after a quick visit to the 100 yard range to verify our zero's off we went.  He was shooting his 223 and I brought the 6mm Grendel.  My buddy did well out to 330 yards but at 425 and 550, he just didn't have enough gun to be effective.  So I let him shoot mine and he was good all the way out to 550.  The Grendel was pushing 108g bullets at 2720 fps and that was good enough to knock down some big steel at 550.

After I got home and started cleaning the AR, I remembered why I don't shoot them very often....they are a pain to clean.

Playing with the big boys today.. a matching pair of rim fires.. ????
The little rpr 22lr and a 17hmr.. the 22 rpr loves the ar tactical cci's. It will flat out shoot at 50 yards with them.. the recoil is horrendous though.. ???? had to put a brake on it.. lmao.. had one laying around and thought why not.. cool looking any way.. lol
Cold and rainy out today so its a good day to set in the man cave and shoot the rimfires..

The 22rf are fun to shoot.....easy to go thru a lot of rounds.  The great thing is that there is no brass to clean after your done.

I did shoot today.. lol  shot my ar 6.5 creedmoor about 25 times.. fun gun to shoot and pretty pleased with how its shooting.. i will say this. Driving a ar is a bit different than driving a bolt gun.. alot going on there after you pull the trigger on a ar.. tougher to shoot than a bolt gun for me .. but i was smacking a 2 inch plate with it about 70% of the time at 430 yards.. im happy with that..

I find shooting a Benchrest bolt gun is different than a chassis bolt gun and different from an AR.  Each takes me awhile to get used before they start grouping well.  Kinda like jumping into a car you've never raced.....it takes a bit to get the feel of it.  With the AR, I do find I shoot a lot more rounds....something about just pulling the trigger.   I love shooting the Grendel AR at steel....very effective out to 550 yards.

Shot my 6br a little yesterday and again a little this evening.. cloudy and about 55 degrees with a light wind of 6mph hitting me in the back..
Made me a new target for my 430 yard range.. its a square plate that measures 11/2"x11/2".. after 3 or 4 shots on my big plate to get things lined up good i went 3 for 3 on the little plate..
Shooting a 107 gr. Seirra match king with re 15.. shoots them pretty well..  :D

May not believe this but after the first 2 shots on the little plate i could see they was at the bottom  of the plate so i gave the golden eagle one click up and sent the 3rd one..

Shot the Savage 260 Rem a few times today after sighting in a new Burris 4.5-14x42 Fullfield Ballistic Plex at 100 yds yesterday.
Using the ballistic dots I was able to hit 2 at 200, 1 at 300 and 1 at 400 yds. I was rested on bags laying across the hood of the truck and lost 1 shot at 300. I must have used the wrong dot or didn't allow enough for the wind.

I would like to shoot but we are below zero with 17 inches of snow on the flat. My snowblower is still onda fritz with several hours of work to get it going and it will be a struggle to chase it down and back to the end of my range. I am starting to get my strength back, I want to thank whoever donated the blood that they gave me in the hospital. I hope they were smart bodybuilders! I don't use the reverse in my blower because it is so slow and I always pull it backwardswhen turning around. This took a lot out of me before. I hope I can still hack it.

Just talked to a good friend in Driggs, ID. He takes 15 minute breaks between snow blowing his driveway, AGAIN!

We talked quite a bit about the weather in Florida  :D

Shot my 6.5prc today some.. chilly out and breezy so i shot out of the confines of my man cave at a 100 yards.. with wayne talking about reloading for theirs and shooting them he inspired me to send a few down mine.. i shot three 5 shot groups with it.. the first being with a clean cold bore then 2 other groups.. the gun is shooting the 153.5 berger hybrids pretty well i think.. rl23 is my powder of choice and their running in the low 2900's

I did make a 1/2 moa correction to the left after my second group.. i should have gave it a click up as well but didnt..

Shot at our Monday morning practice session out to 600 yards.  We have a local match next Sunday at that distance so we had a good turn-out.  This will be an electronic target match which will be new for me.  The club is mixing up doing registered NBRSA matches and then local electronic target matches.  We're working to pull in some new shooters and creating some new classes for chassis guns etc.

The electronic targets are pretty nice.  You get to see each shot immediately with the group size and score.  Here is the 6mm Grendel.....slowing getting it dialed in.

After we shot the practice, a fellow shooter and I went and shot pistols at the public range.  I hadn't shot my 9mm Beretta 92FS in several years...it was fun to get some time with it.

I haven't been to the range yet this year, it's about 45 min. away. It's gonna be a while before I get there, it's cold with snow on the ground. The temp isn't a big deal but I want to recover my brass.

Correct! 😊

Still wrestling the picture posting from an iPhone with this new forum software.  It seems you have to convert the iOS pic format into pdf to get it to transfer.

Still looking for a better path. 😊

Shot my A bolt today, doing a seating depth test, as it was nice out finally and with little wind. I was thinking about chucking my rifle in the bush as it was not going good for most of it. Seems this rifle is picky with its pencil barrel.

Hmmm my MacBook Pro is broken, have to see how to upload images on this iPhone.

Not sure what I would conclude from your targets other than 43 looks the best.

Kitty?   What? Lol oh, it just scrolls randomly through Imgur. Not my photos or posts. I will delete it and find another way.
I should probably try 42, 43, 44, then back up to 200yards.

Shot another 164 FF loads from 6 BR to BRA yesterday breaking in 2 new barrels for the newly stocked and front sledded 19# Panda HG

Takes about 6 hours to break in 2 barrels including the barrel swap. Includes cleaning each barrel @ 3,5, 10, 20 & 40 +/-rounds.

Today my youngest son and I shot some steel in a 20 mph cross wind, i made first round hits at 600 & 735 yards holding about 3.5 & 4.5 MOA windage shooting the KRG Bravo stocked Rem 700 in 6.5x47L imp pushing a 130 Berger HVLD @ 3000 fps

Fun but chilly LOL

Me and two other guys went down in the bottoms today and shot long.. started at 600 then 800, 900, 1000 and 1200.. my 6.5 x284 shot well.. i also shot my dasher and 6.5 prc.. we had a tough wind.. 10 mph. But one minute it was blowing at 8 oclock the next it was blowing at 4 oclock. Then it might blow straight toward us.. the dasher took 4 minutes of wind at 800 and 2 minutes of wind at a 1000 at one point.. the 6.5x284 i had to hold left edge of the plate part of the time. Right edge part of the time and straight up other times at 800,1000 and 1200.. struggled a little with the prc.. think my zero was off on it.. one of the guys shot a dasher also and struggled from 800 on out.. the other guy shot a 6.5 creedmoor and struggled a little till he got his dope figured out then shot good.. all in all had a good day even though the wind was tough and it was cold..

Grant that sounds like a real fun day, with some more input for your rifle selection in that upcoming match. Considering the course of fire that you have described, it seems to me the 6.5x284 has more to offer than your other cartridge choices. As I understand it you are looking for hits, not groups or high scores. Considering that, a straight 284 or Shehane would be on my list as well.
I'm sure we will all be following along and wishing you great success in that comp. 👍

It was a fun day jerry.. maybe the toughest day of shooting i have had so far.. in the time it took to cycle the bolt and chamber the round the wind would change and be blowing from the opposite side.. i guess you would call it a quartering value.. .. and i have not seen it change like that that quick.. first for me.. the straight 284 would be good for that match but goes transonic quicker than the 6.5x284.. were going to shoot down there one more time before that match in march.. this time i will also take the 284.. but well pleased with how the 6.5x284 did today with the 153 atips..
