IBS had a hiccup a few weeks ago that has turned into a great opportunity for the western long range benchrest shooters. The 1000 Yd National match has been moved from the east coast to the Deep Creek range in Montana - mid August. WoooHoooo!!  Two days of eight, 1000 yd targets agg'd for score and group. I enjoy the long range protocol and 1000 yd is my favorite for sure.

 I wasn't planning another long driving excursion for this year, but this is an opportunity I just can't pass up. It will be another 4-7 years before this event makes it back into the western states and who knows what can happen in that amount of time. Driving to the east coast with an RV and all the reloading paraphernalia is probably not going to happen for me. A one day drive to Montana is so much more doable.

I shot Deep Creek in my first ever competition back in 2019. It's a very pretty range up in the wooded hills south of Missoula. Evenings are cool in August and the camaraderie of the DC shooters is super. Guess I'm going to be listening to Willy's, "On the Road Again" some more in 6 weeks. ?

I need to get better,  but perhaps by the time it comes back around, I may be ready.

In the meantime, SacValley will host a National Event in September of this year.  It is both a 600 and 1000 yard match over 5 days.  I plan to enter.   They'll get about 40 folks entering so there should be some good competition....mainly from the west coast.

I'm guessing Dave will be out there too.

The 600 / 1000 format brings an added challenge for sure . If you are lucky you can find a node that works well at both distances - that doesn't always happen. Traditionally BR matches are "either-or" - not commonly are the two distances combined. Seems like there may be a trend developing to throw a larger challenge on the event with the distance combination. The Rendezvous was 10/10 targets over 3 days. A five day match sounds like a super fun time. Plenty of shooting but also a LOT of time to hangout and get to know your fellow competitors.

I'm actually looking at shooting a 3 match weekend the weekend before in Harris MN then coming back west to Elbow Lake and shooting the 3 match weekend there the same weekend of Nationals which includes the MN state championship.

It's a tough choice but I know I'll be more competitive at the 600 yard venues and will shoot 48 targets vs 8 at DC for the effort spent.

I may change my mind yet but I doubt it. I cut my 600 season short last year to get my business liquidated and sort of didn't finish what I set out to do last year.

 I was off on the dates.  It is listed in "Precision Rifleman" (NBRSA publication) for Oct 18-25th, hosted by the Sloughhouse LR club.  It is listed as the 600/1000 Yard Nationals and part of the Southwest Region.  It was originally planned for earlier in the year but the club asked to push it out in hopes that we would be past Covid and attendance would be larger.  I will start getting email regarding the event a couple months ahead of time.  I'll be sure to post any entry forms I get.

It would be great if Dave or any other forum member attends.  It would good to shoot and hang out with you.

Details are starting to become available for the Nationals here in N. CA.

Monday,  October 18th,   Registration and sight in at 600 yards
Tuesday , October 19th,   First round of competition at 600 yards
Wednesday, October 20th,   Second round of competition at 600 yards
   (competitors will not shoot the same 600 yard relay as they did the day before)

Thursday,  October 21st,   Registration and sight in at 1000 yards
Friday,  October 22nd,  First round of 1000 yard at match
Saturday,  October 23rd,   Second round of competition at 1000 yards
   (competitors will not shoot the same 1000 yard relay as they did the day before)

Once the registration forms are published, I'll post them in case someone on the forum would like to enter.

I've thought about attending both the IBS and the NBRSA Nationals in the same year. What a kick that would be. I'm leaving for Montana this morning for the IBS event that starts next Saturday. It's about a  14 hour drive, so with travel time and set up once on site, there should still be enough time for some load development before the fun starts.

The IBS Rendezvous was a similar format to the 600/1000 yd plans NBRSA has for October. At the Rendezvous, shooting both ranges on the same day did add a challenge. Looks like NBRSA decided to separate them out.

I'll be looking at a road map to CA when I get back from Montana. ?

Jerry, good luck and good shooting at the Montana event.  

I drove from Grand Junction to the Sacramento Area some years ago....I got up and left around 6am and got home before 9pm....so 15 hours or so from the Western Colorado border.  You have a ways to get to Grand Junction so definitely more than one day's drive...at least for me.  Plus in October, the weather can be a bit tricky as well.  Hope you decide to come !!

Jerry head north and turn left on 80 at Cheyenne. Once you get to Reno head to lake Tahoe on into Sacramento.
If you decide to go I could very well be persuaded to meet you there.

The entry forms were just published today for both the 600yd and the 1000yd competitions.   In the past, I believe there has been some good representation by some major vendors (I know Vortex was there at the last one as an example).  So should be a good time and the weather should be reasonable.  ( I just noticed that the file name was for 2020 but the data in the file is correct).

On the highway in Wyo headed back to Colorado with my tail tucked between my legs. ?
I managed to pull a bone headed mistake on my third target and DQed. Both embarrassing and super frustrating. It's much easier to accept a load or conditions failure because you don't always have control of those situations. Mental mistakes in competition on the other hand leave a very bad taste in your mouth and a long term nasty memory.
I started out well, dropping just one point through the first two targets. Think I got to feeling cocky and did not focus well enough. Good lesson I guess. Definitely one I won't forget any time soon.

Lesson learned jerry. Remember it but put it behind you. Dont let it shake your confidence..

Sent my registration in today for the Nationals at SacValley in Oct.  Just need to keep sorting bullets, cases etc to get ready.  Need about 400 rounds for the 4 days.
