Title: a plug for peterson
Post by: gman47564 on September 28, 2019, 09:38:22 PM
I built a 284 Winchester a couple weeks ago and needed brass for it.. did my homework and seen where most were using 6.5x284 lapua brass and necking it up to the 284.. I didn't really want to take this route so I looked at my options for 284 brass and decided to give the Peterson brass a try... when they arrived they were sealed up in clear 50 count clear ammo boxes with a thick piece of foam sitting on top of the mouths... when I removed the foam I thought WOW!!! them has to be the prettiest dang cases ive ever seen... no dents no dings... for a first glance they looked perfect...
I picked 10 random cases out of the box and weighed them on a fx120i... all were within 1 grain of each other... so I loaded 30 of them to kinda break my barrel in and get my scope lined up and all that good stuff with a random charge kinda ... as I had got some advice from a couple other guys where they were at with theirs and I droped a gr. below theirs and shot them.. the gun shot half moa with that random charge so I load 20 more and shoot them... now I have 50 fireformed cases.. after cleaning and fl sizing with a forester competition sizing die the first thing I checked was shoulder bump... I checked more than half of them and they were all with in a .0005... another wow moment... then checked oal of the case to see if they needed trimed... nope as they were all within a .001.. so inside and outside chamfered them and primed them and started loading a 10 shot ladder... after getting the ten loaded I checked cbto on all 10 of them... another wow moment for me.. all ten were within a .001 with one pull of the handle with a forster competition seater die...  so I got 10 rounds loaded and think im going to check concentricity on one... so put one in my Hornady concentricity gauge and gave it a slow turn and the gauge didn't move... again WOW.. thinking that was a fluke I checked another and same result.. gauge didn't move... so checked all 10 and none of them moved the gauge.. I was so impressed I sent a video to jerry and dave... lol..

anyway  I just wanted to share how impressed I am with the Peterson 284 Winchester brass... top shelf in my opinion... I use lapua in my 6.5x284 and I have to say I think the Peterson brass is better... this is just my thoughts and opinions.. take it for what its worth... I will be buying a 100 more of these in the near future...

Grant, I agree with your assessment of Peterson brass.  That is the only brass I use for the 6mm CM and have slowly been migrating my 6.5 CM and 243 Win to them as well.

I'm going to make a set of SP brass for my 7-08 improved this winter out of Peterson, Alpha or Lapua.

No experience with Peterson, but Alpha cases were purchased
for forming my .25 project. I'll swear these cases were cherry
picked special for me by there inspectors.

Was this the regular brass or their select?   I've been wanting to try Peterson.  I generally use Lapua because I am too lazy to neck turn lol.

Fantastic brass; the best I've ever used. Any replacement brass from now on will be Peterson.

I plan on using up my Hornady brass until  I toast my barrel then I was going to switch to Alpha, I guess I will consider Peterson as well now.

That's what I'm hearing from other good shooters about capacity.
My stock of prepped Hornady brass is large, and would really hate
to give up any capacity playing with the 6.5 Creed.....But I do still
want that Alpha hat.....LOL

What's the deal with Peterson Brass, and a select version ??

The select is guaranteed to be within 1 gr. In weight of each other and within .001 in length of each other.. I guess this is what I got from them as it is within them parameters..

Still tight.

How does the capacity of the peterson compare to Hornady?

I cant really say cornbread as I have no 284 hornady cases to compare them too.. maybe someone else will chime in that can..
