Here is my stock Savage 12 LRP with Athlon ares 4.5-27×50 . This is my first rig and I am looking forward to a lot of frustration in learning and reloading for this rifle.

#676
New build:  .284 Win set-up for no turn Norma brass and 184gr Berger Hybrids

Borden BRMXD action, Bartlein 31" 8.5tw 5r barrel, Ezell PDT tuner, Bix'n Andy Bench Rest trigger @ 2oz., McMillan Kestros ZR stock, Hart R.A.D. recoil reducing pad.  Will be topped with a March 10-60x56 HighMaster optic with fine x-hair- 3/32 MOA dot reticle.

I wanted LSU colors but when the gelcoat blended it came out not purple/gold but, as I described in another post, gay disco nightmare pink/yellow :o  :o  :o .  I was going to name her Tiger but I think Nightmare will be more appropriate ;) .   Shade your eyes!!

If you saw it in person you would likely hold that comment Grant....LOL

Yes, the aluminum rail that is offset from the forearm is a bag rider to allow a lower CG in the bag and a longer 'wheel base' to help stabilize the rifle while aiming.  It also increases the flex in the system which is supposed to be a good thing....it will be my first flexible competition rifle.  The aluminum cylinder is a prop my gunsmith uses for photos.  Again, trust me, this thing would only look good through beer goggles!  But...if it shoots good I don't care.  The reigning national F-class long range champ (and record holder for 200-22x socre) Norm Harrold shoots the same rig to great effect. (his is a Shehane improved case...mine will be straight .284)  He said the flex is a little weird at first but it is easy to tune and I saw his waterlines when we were squadded together at the last National and they were incredible.  I am going to shoot a few cases tonight to get velocity readings to find where the charge is for 2800-2900 fps with a 184gr Berger Hybrid.

I am going to test RL-23, 16 H 4350, 4831sc.  It seems like H4350 plays real well with the Berger 180/184's in the .284 but I will work with RL-23 first.

robin I wondered if 23 or 26 would be a good choice for it... when I burn the barrel out on my 6.5x284 I may try a straight 284..

Back on page 40 I posted a pic of my Howa in an LSS chassis BUT I snatched that chassis off, added a folding stock attachment and mounted an 18" .308 barreled action and came up with a nice little travel/backpack/bugout rifle so the 6.5 Creed need a new home and this is how it landed:

I also started a new project, I got a hankerin' for a light weight mountain rifle. I don't NEED one just WANTED one.  Howa light weight 20" barreled action in a boyds light weight thumbhole stock. The goal is 6.5lb unloaded. So far it's 5 3/4lb without mounts or scope.  Talley light weight mounts on the way and I have a 6x Nikon scope on the shelf. Should meet the weight easily.

I could not get H4350 to play nice in my Shehane, but it's happy with 4831SC. For the Berger 180s there is usually a nice node around 2830 fps. Robin are you going to be ok with that velocity or are you going for the next node up?

I am going to settle on the low/mid 2800fps node...unless the barrel and brass beg for more.  I want to remain under 4" waterline at 1000yds over at least 25 consecutive shots.  The guys running in the low 2900's don't have very good brass/barrel life and most say their waterline opens up a little by the end of a fast match.  I tested RL-23 over 6 charge weights shooting into a stump with the MS attached.  Upper 2700's with 54.0gr, 183gr hybrid at 0.015" off lands...was just compressing in the new brass.  I will try again in once fired brass but for new brass I am going to run another velo test with H4350 to find the 2825fps 'charge' and start seating depth testing.  I want a new brass charge that gets me in that ballpark that is good enough for local matches.  I have about 1300 new cases to form :D .  Actually, if this barrel is a great shooter I'll form about 400 (enough for a one week national).  If the barrel is average I'll form about 180...enough for a 2 day match.

That, or H4350, seems to be the consensus in a straight .284.  I've got more than 16 pounds of 4831sc in the closet...I'm kinda hoping it will shine as it is all the same lot and.....PAID for ;) .

I think I would definitely work the 23 also.
A temp stable RE22 on paper is too good to not give a fair shake. Visions of RE16...
